Research Interests

My research, funded by the RC-UK Energy Programme, is about sustainable energy and communities. It focuses on urban energy governance and business organisation, and the connection between city-scale low carbon energy projects, and global energy and financial markets. As a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh multi-disciplinary Inquiry: Facing Up To Climate Change I examined the role of civil society in sustainable use of resources. I have also held research funding from ESRC, DTI, EOC, British Council and HE Funding Councils and have published in sociology, psychology and management studies journals.

Recent invited presentations include Climate Change is about Society: How Will We Adapt?, Adaptation Scotland Conference, June 2011; Organising District Heating, Edinburgh Community Energy Cooperative Conference, October, 2011; Facing Up To Climate Change, Scottish National Rural Network, October 2011; Potential for Action at City Scale: Low Carbon Energy, Scottish Council for Development and Industry, October 2011; Collaboration to Improve Digital Participation in Low Carbon Economy, GovCamp Scotland, November 2011; Implications of the Renewable Heat Incentive for District Heating in the UK, Scotland's 2020 Climate Group and University of Strathclyde January 2012; Theory into Practice: Organising District Heating, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency/SNIFFER Workshop on Sustainable Cities, February 2012; Multi-level Governance of Socio-Technical Innovation: District Heating in the UK, Jean Monnet International Workshop: The Governance of Innovation and Socio-Technical Systems in Europe: New Trends, New Challenge, Copenhagen Business School, March 2012.

I am a Member of the Scottish Government Expert Commission on District Heating, and a Trustee of SNIFFER, an environmental charity. I have recently served as Non-Executive Director of the Board of NHS Health Scotland (2003-2011) and am a founder member of the NHS Scotland network for Sustainability, Health and Equity. I was Vice-Chair of the Board of the Scottish Low Pay Unit and Partner in a European Commission Project on 'Mainstreaming Sex Equality in Regional and Local Government', coordinated from the Comunidad de Madrid.
