Title: Theories of Technology and the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
This paper applies three perspectives on technology - technological systems theory, actor-network theory, and the local, tacit knowledge perspective - to the problem of the permanent elimination of nuclear weapons. The mechanisms suggested by each perspective individually are not water-tight, but their interactions are benign, from the point of view of elimination. There seems a reasonable possibility that a world-wide elimination of nuclear weapons, conducted in carefully planned phases, could be made durable.
