A Shared Space and a Space for Sharing

The Edinburgh project (Dr Julie Brownlie and Dr Frances Shaw) is one strand of a larger study entitled A Shared Space and a Space for Sharing, funded as part of the ESRC’s EMoTICON (Empathy and Trust In Communicating Online) programme. The other partner universities are KCL, Nottingham, Sheffield, Birmingham and Lincoln. The aim of the project as a whole is to examine, through a transdisciplinary approach, online trust and empathy in extreme situations. Drawing on an empirical exploration of Samaritan's online practices and suicide talk on Twitter, the aim of the Edinburgh study is to explore sociologically how online trust and empathy are negotiated in the context of emotional distress.
