Sociology: Research

Grants and Projects

Research in sociology at Edinburgh involves a substantial level of external funding from bodies such as the UK Economic and Social Research Council and European Research Council.  For the recent research assessment in the Research Excellence Framework, we've gathered together data on income for the sociology unit of assessment at Edinburgh (which includes colleagues in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies and African Studies as well).  Research income is currently running at an average of £1.9 million a year, and is widely distributed across our staff, early-career as well as senior: 86% of staff have won external peer-reviewed grants.  Altogether, between January 2008 and July 2013, we won 17 externally-funded fellowships and 70 other new external research grants.
