Thesis Overview
My research looks at innovative educational approaches concerning sustainability that have grown considerable in the last years, consequence of the increasing concerns over the issue of sustainability. Considering the role of education in supporting the national sustainable development goals by reducing carbon emissions, on one hand, and its role in increasing awareness and changing attitudes of pupils on the other, I will look at a particular strategy called ‘sustainable schools’ to understand how schools are translating these imperatives into practice.
The concepts of sustainability and sustainable development are submerged in polemic, disagreements and contradictory views. Education for sustainable development or sustainability implies certain knowledge, values, and skills that we assume are going to be necessary to live in a more sustainable way in the future. I am interested in seeing how those are interpreted, practise and measured in schools.
When education is perceived as a central element in the achievement of a more ‘sustainable society’ we are not just asking to add another subject to the curriculum of schools, we are perhaps asking for a different kind of education, for a change in the paradigm, once schools cannot be part of the solution with the same kind of education that helped in the creation of the problem.
