I am interested in social movements and activism in both the UK and US. My research specialises in surveillance and the media. I have conducted research into memory and the invocation of the Founding Fathers in the US, civil liberties after 9/11, and (most recently) counter/surveillance at public demonstrations in Britain. I am also interested in drug policy, drug culture, and drug reform activism.
Counter/surveillance & Protest: Watching and being watched at public demonstrations in Britain
This project will investigate the performance of police surveillance and activist countersurveillance using a range of qualitative methods. The effects of this increasingly mediated relationship on political protest and policing will be examined, as will the ambiguous role of the media in facilitating the strategic use of protest counter/surveillance.
