Areas of Interest
My doctoral research is primarily informed by interviews with serving soldiers in the British Army. These interviews are framed by soldier considerations of an amalgamation involving long-standing Scottish infantry regiments. The data obtained from these interviews is complimented by information drawn from hard-copy and electronic news, modest ethnographic experiences supported by visual images, and instances recorded from daily life in and around Edinburgh. This broad approach to data collection was employed so as to offer a range of evidence reflective not only of the military context, but also of the larger (civilian) communities to which military personnel belong. The final synthesis of interpretations, as guided by the aforementioned data, will hopefully promote a better understanding of national, organisational, and professional identities in Scotland.
