The seminar session is split into two parts. In the first half, Nick will perform three electronic music scores inspired by his research in Japan: “The Voices of Akihabara”, “Jihanki” and “Tokyo After Hours”. These scores are derived from field recordings collected in Tokyo and explore the city as a polyrhythmic ensemble where myriad human and nonhuman voices congregate, coalesce and conflict. In the second half he will deliver a paper on his related work on the sociology of the voice and the Japanese virtual singer, Hatsune Miku.
